Great place for staying in Yogyakarta

We did spent three nights at the Plaza on a New Year's Eve package and have really been satisfied.
I'd give 5 stars to the room, the pool, the two restaurants as well as the gym and the spa. Conveniently located a few minutes taxi ride to Malioboro and a few minutes walk/beciak to shopping malls.
Staff is competent and professional. Rooms are perfectly clean, comfortable and fully serviced.
Breakfast is sumptuous, buffet style all you can eat and all you can have. A-la-carte restaurants too, there's a great Indonesian and westerners choice of food at a reasonable price. Nearby "warungs" also could be a good budget chioce. An internal travel agency can organise convenient trips to Borobudur (about 1-1,5hrs drive away) and/ or Prambanan (30min away). We'd certainly recommend this hotel.

Kotagede, which is often, called Sargede lies about five km southeast of Yogyakarta. In this old-city, tourist can visit the cemetery of the Mataram Kings like Sutowijoyo, also known as Ngabei Loring Pasar the founder of the Mataram kingdom who was then called Panembahan Senopati. There is also the unique tomb of Ki Ageng Mangir. He was Panembahan Senopati's son in law and his enemy at the same time. His body was buried outside the complex. Benteng Vredeburg (lit. Vredeburg fort) is situated exactly face to face with Gedung Agung. The Dutch colonial built it in 1765 during the domination. The Sultan Hamengku Buwono X’s messengers at 5 o’clock in the morning began the ritual in Argo Dalem. Solemnly, they give the offerings to Eyang (gand-father) Lawu.

Batik is synonymous with Indonesia and Central Java (Yogyakarta and Solo in particular) is center of Batik production in Indonesia. A brief overview for the uninitiated: Batik is the process of applying wax to cloth (cotton or silk) and then dying the cloth. Once dyed, the wax is removed by soaking in hot water and the pattern where the wax once was is then visible. This process can be repeated several times depending upon the intricacy of the design and colours. (FYI, there are many different styles of Batik and Batik from Yogya is generally more traditional in colour and design, while Batik from Solo is more colourful).

In days gone by the process of applying wax was done either with a metal stamp (Batik Cap) or by hand (Batik Tulis) with a tool resembling a smokers pipe. Nowadays this process is mainly done for promotional purposes at Batik shops and factories. For the most part Batik is now manufactured by large factories using automated equipment (that however does not make it any less beautiful - in fact with automation the number and intricacy of designs and colours as well as products available is greater than ever).

It has an outstanding variety of products at very good prices and is conveniently located. This Javanese Palace was, and still is, the centerpiece of Yogyakarta and for the Hamengku Buwono Dynasty. Originally designed and built by Hamengku Buwono I (circa 1776), it is an outstanding example of elegant, classical Javanese architecture. The Keraton has a North to South orientation and is made up of a series of Bangsal (halls) which are venues for Gamelan, Dances and Wayang (puppet) performances, as well as spacious courtyards, pavilions and domiciles.

The north to south orientation is quite important inasmuch as the Palace, the Tugu and Mount Merapi (see below) are all in a perfectly straight line. This axis is believed to be blessed and in olden days the Sri Sultan used to concentrate his mind along this axis before making an important decision.

You will undoubtedly notice a number of elderly, elegant, reserved and dignified men in traditional batik and Javanese headgear (Blangkon). These are the royal retainers, whose family service to the Sultan goes back many, many generations. These days they are responsible for maintaining the palace and its exhibits, collecting entrance fees and enforcing proper tourist decorum. They consider themselves privileged and act accordingly.

The Keraton itself houses an interesting variety of historically significant objects - from the Antique Royal Gamelan, to Royal Palanquins (glass enclosed conveyances for the Royal family that carried on the shoulders of up to 16 bearers) and original oil portraits and photos of the ten Sultans and their wives and children.

Somewhat surprisingly, the palace is also home to approximately 20,000 people who live and work in the Keraton even today. Many of these residents sell souvenirs, snacks and soft drinks to the many tourists who arrive daily.

On the northern side of the main square in front of the Karaton, Sono-Budoyo Museum is the pick of Yogya’s museums. Thought not particularly well maintained, it has a first-class collection of Javanese art, including wayang kulit puppets, topeng (masks), kris and batik. Dating back to 1765, Benteng Vredeburg is a Dutch-are from opposite the main post office. The restored fort is now a museum with dioramas showing the history of the independence movement in Yogya, the architecture is wroth a look, but the dioramas are designed for Indonesian patriots.

Up until his death in 1990, Affandi, Indonesia’s best known artist internationally, lived and worked in a unusual three house studio overlooking the river, about 6km east of the town centre. The Affandi Museum in the grounds exhibits his inversions work, as well as painting by his daughter Kartika and other artist. Affandi is buried in the beck garden.

Sasmitaluka Jendral Sudirman is the memorial home of general Sudirman, the commander of the revolutionary forces who died shortly after the siege of Yogay in 1948.

Museum Sasana Wiratama honors the Indonesian hero, Prince Diponogoro, who was leader of the bloody but futile rebellion of 1825-30 against the Dutch. A motley collection of the prince’s belongings and other exhibits are kept in the small museum at his former Yogya residence.

Museum Perjuangan in the southern part to the city, as a small and a rather for collection of photographs documenting the Indonesia Revolution, the large Army Museum display documents, home-made weapons, uniform and medical equipment from the revolutions years.

Kota Gede
Kota Gede has been famed as the hub of Yogya’s silver industry since the 1930s. But this quiet old town, which is now a suburb of Yogya, was the first capital of the Mataram Kingdom, founded by Penembahan Senopati in 1952. Senopati is buried in the small mossy graveyard of an old mosque near the town’s central market. You can visit the sacred tomb (open around 9am noon Sun, Mon & Thurs, around 1pm-3pm Fri), visitor should wear conservative dress. On days when the tomb is closed there is little to see here.

Its name means Mountain of Fire. It is very close to the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1700 m above sea level.
Several of its eruptions have caused fatalities. It was erupting from 1992 to 2002, and a particularly large explosion killed 43 people in 1994. It began erupting again in 2006, and scientists believe a large eruption is imminent. In light of the hazards it poses to populated areas, it has been designated a Decade Volcano.
Merapi is the youngest in a group of volcanoes in southern Java. It is situated at a subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian Plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate. It is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire - a section of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and South East Asia

Stratigraphic analysis reveals that eruptions in the Merapi area began about 400,000 years ago, and from then until about 10,000 years ago, eruptions were typically effusive, and the outflowing lava emitted was basaltic. Since then, eruptions have become more explosive, with viscous andesitic lavas often generating lava domes. Dome collapse has often generated pyroclastic flows, and larger explosions, which have resulted in eruption columns, have also generated pyroclastic flows through column collapse.

Typically, small eruptions occur every two to three years, and larger ones every 10-15 years or so. Notable eruptions, often causing many deaths, have occurred in 1006, 1786, 1822, 1872 (the most violent eruption in recent history), and 1930—when thirteen villages were destroyed and 1400 people killed by pyroclastic flows.
A very large eruption in 1006 is claimed to have covered all of central Java with ash. The volcanic devastation is claimed to have led to the collapse of the Hindu Kingdom of Mataram, however there is insufficient evidence from that era for this to be substantiated.

Merapi continues hold particular significance for the Javanese: it is one of four places where officials from the royal palaces of Yogyakarta and Solo make annual offerings to placate the ancient Javanese spirits.

Yogyakarta-Prambanan Temple

This magnificent Shivaite temple derives it name from the village where it is located. Locally known as the Loro Jonggrang Temple, or the Temple of the "Slender Virgin", it is the biggest and most beautiful Hindu temple in Indonesia.

Seventeen kilometers east of Yogyakarta, it is believed to have been built by King Balitung Maha Sambu in the middle of the ninth century. Its parapets are adorned with a bas-reliefs depicting the famous Ramayana story.

The first open-air theater on the southern side of the temple was built in 1960 and the new theater on the western side of the temple in 1988. During full moon evenings in the month from May to October, the Ramayana ballet is performed right here. The temple complex of Prambanan lies among green fields and villages. It has eight shrines, of which the three main ones are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

A Mahayana Buddhist stupa, Borobudur holds the honour of being the largest Buddhist monument found anywhere on this earth. It is located 41 km north west of Jogjakarta (Yogyakarta) in Central Java, a province of Indonesia. Though, there are no written historical records available to prove who actually constructed Borobudur and for what purpose, still the estimation of construction time suggests that it was built during the rule of Sailendra dynasty between 750-800 AD.

Later, in its history, Borobudur was deserted, the reason is again uncertain. Some earlier scholars believe that a famine caused by eruption in Mount Merapi was the reason while more recent scholars attribute the desertion to the shift of Javanese power from the area of Borobudur to the valley of the Brantas. After its abandonment, Borobudur was rediscovered by Lieutenant-Governor Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814. He sent a group of men to make further investigations and from 1835 onwards work began to clear off the dense tropical vegetation that engulfed it. Drawings of reliefs were made and appeared in the first Borobudur monograph of 1873. Photographs were also taken which further helped in instilling a sense of appreciation for the Borobudur monument.

Ngobaran is such an exotic beach. When sea water falls, you can see spread of both green and brown seaweed. Being looked from the top, the spread of the algae growing in between coral reef looks like spread of rice field in a densely populated area. The naming of the beach has its own history. Hundreds years ago, someone named Dipokusumo, who was a fugitive of Majapahit Kingdom, came to this area to meditate. When he saw water dripping from the crack of the coral reef, he named this area 'parangtritis', originating from the word parang (stone) and tumaritis (water drops). The beach close to the area was then named the same.
Parangtritis is a beach full of myths, which is believed to be the manifestation of the unity among Merapi Mountain, Yogyakarta Kingdom, and Parangtritis Beach

The legend tells that Panembahan Senopati and Sunan Kalijaga once met in this place after completing their meditation. Panembahan Senopati was reminded of being a humble ruler despite his supernatural powers.

The primary attraction of this beach is its natural view. The enchantment of the coastal scenery can be seen from different angles to give you different experiences. When you are standing at the seashore, you will see the wide ocean with the high waves and steeply mountainside on the east side.

To get the view from the site, just walk or hire the horse-cart westwards and you look southwards when you have reached the place. You may get to the place by riding a horse that you shall rent at negotiable price.

After enjoying the scenery of Parangtritis beach from the seashore, you can leave for Langse Cave for a different experience. On the earth road leading to the cave, you can look westwards to see Parangtritis from different angle. Before reaching Langse Cave, we suggest that you pay a visit to the graveyard of Syeh Bela Belu that will give you spiritual experience. Usually, many pilgrims come on certain days such as certain Tuesday that is called Kliwon on Javanese calendar as one of the five Javanese days of the week.

From the graveyard, you may challenge yourself to continue your journey to Langse Cave that you have to go on foot to get to the cave that is 3 kilometers away through as high as 400 meters mountainside at the slope of almost 900. To get into the cave that is also called the Queen of South cave, you have to get the permission from the tomb guard. According to the guard of Depok Beach several times entered the cave when he was young, we will get beautiful view of the south ocean at the mouth of the cave that directly faces the ocean.

On the fifth day of the fifth month of Chinese calendar, you will be able to see Peh Cun ceremony procession in Parangtritis. Peh Cun, originating from the word Peh that means oar and Cun that means boat, is Chinese expression of gratitude to God. This rite is also meant to commemorate Khut Gwan (Qi Yuan), a loyal patriot as well as a minister who was once betrayed by his colleague so that he committed a suicide.

Peh Cun ceremony is unique since there is no festival of dragon-decorated boats rowing like in other regions, instead there is an attraction of standing egg. The attraction begin at 11:00 a.m. and by afternoon, according to the myth, the egg will stand upright with no means of support are needed. By 01:00 p.m., however, the egg will suddenly fall down and no one can erect it anymore.

To get to Parangtritis Beach, you can take either one of the two routes. One is the route of Yogyakarta-Imogiri-Siluk-Parangtritis with the river and coral reel scenery on the way. The other is Yogyakarta-Parangtritis route that is easier to take with quite smooth road. It is suggested that you do not wear green clothes to respect local people who believe that green clothes will bring misfortune.

It's not a pretty sight but the black thing that you see in the picture was the most delicious grilled duck I've tasted in the whole of Yogya (Central Java) . Surprsingly, it wasn't bought at an upscale restaurant but in many of the lesehans ( local eateries ) found in Marlioborough Street. The local eateries over here are situated along the pavement and the furniture is spartan, just a couple of mats and a low table. Somehow, it reminded me of eating in Hanoi but this was more pleasant. I got to laze around like a Roman after a particularly satisfying meal of grilled chicken and duck. To cater to the sweet Javanese tooth, the duck was deliberately smeared with oodles of sweet black sauce ( kecap manis) before grilling it on an open fire. The result looks like crap but it tastes heavenly.

Cost : Each piece of duck cost us USD0.90, the chicken was slightly cheaper at USD0.85, the hot lime drink and tea was about USD0.30 each.

I was wandering about in the Kraton ( royal palace) when one of the palace guards started to gesticulate wildly to me . It took me a while to realise that he was pointing to a star fruit tree. What confused me intially was because he kept saying Belimbing, which meant a small sour green fruit in Singapore. It took me a while to realise that he was refering to the starfruit. So, if you happen to go to the Kraton the next time, try looking for a star (fruit) that is. It's green when it's unripe and eaten with sauce in a salad (rujuk) , when it's yellow and ripe, it's eaten sliced ( lotis).

Thanks to them, I found out where the best bakso in Yogya was to be had. Well, not only did the bakso turn out to be good, it was biggest one I've tried!
This gigantic thing that I'm holding on my spoon must be the biggest bakso in the whole of Yogya. It was also the yummiest I've ever tasted. Do go to this place and try their soto bakso. It's simply meatballs ( beef) drenched with savoury chicken soup and rice. This delicious dish only cost me 5500Rp.

In downtown Yogyakarta (D.I Yogyakarta) Indonesia, around Malioboro (the shopping centre of Yogyakarta) neighborhood, there are many motels, hostels, and hotels available for local and international tourists. Prices are ranging from very cheap to very expensive (around US$ 5 to US$ 250 or more); Hotel Ibis and Mutiara Hotel are to name some of the famous ones that are located in the heart of downtown Yogyakarta.

When we were attending one of my sisters’ wedding in Yogyakarta, our family lived around Jalan Adi Sucipto, about 25 minutes drive from Adisucipto International Airport. Their rented house was located across Ayam Goreng Suharti, the famous fried chicken restaurant in Yogyakarta and as we were not that familiar with the wedding ceremony building, we decided to stay in a motel not too far from where our family lived instead in Malioboro. This motel is called Wisma Prambanan.

Wisma Prambanan is a pretty good two-storey building motel. The interior is neat though humble, the facility is complete with hot and cold shower plus air conditioner, and the bed is just comfortable. Each room on the upper floor has separated balcony in front of the rooms with bamboo seats and tables. This motel is located right on the main street of Jalan Solo, very close to Jalan Adi Sucipto. The place is clean and well managed. Many green plants surrounding the motel and certainly they make the motel looks very nice and green. Outside the parking lot, there are some Becak (Indonesian rickshaw) lining up ready to take you to wherever you want to go (just don’t forget to bargain for the price though!).

Our room was only Rp 150.000 (US$ 15) at that time. Compare to our first experience in Yan’s Beach Bungalows in Bali, the condition of our room and the motel itself of Wisma Prambanan Yogyakarta is way better, and the service was also good, Javanese are very respectful people. For the same price as Yan’s Beach Bungalows, the room in Wisma Prambanan was even provided not just with very comfortable bed but enough light, TV, toilet paper and blanket!

In holiday season, many hotels, motels, and hostels in Malioboro are fully booked and occupied, and if you can’t find any in Malioboro, check Wisma Prambanan, yes it is not downtown, but taxis and becaks are everywhere, need not to worry, plus you will be closer to reach the famous Prambanan Temple!

In the middle of south Central Java lies the magical region of Yogyakarta, the cradle of Javanese culture and tradition. In the north the volatile, Mount Merapi – the Fire Mountain with captivating physical beauty stands vigorously guarding the surrounding nature.

This gigantic volcano, sometimes dangerous with its eruption and lava spitted from its crater, but at the same time gives tremendous fertility to the land. That's the reason why the farmers – inhabitants living in its slope do not want to leave their ancestor's place of birth. They have a mystical relation with Merapi to live in harmony with 'the rulers' of the mountain to keep them safe and peaceful.
It disclosed that the name Jogja, instead of Yogyakarta or Yogya, is used as a promotion to market Yogyakarta since Y is a difficult alphabetical start for most international audiences -both reading and spelling. While Jogja is easily pronounced as JOG-ja, even JOG could be used as nickname.

Yogyakarta is known for its silver work, leather puppets used for shadow plays (wayang kulit), and a unique style of making batik dyed fabric. It is also known for its vivid contemporary art scene. Yogyakarta is also known for its gamelan music, including the unique style Gamelan Yogyakarta, which developed in the courts.

Water Castle

Built in 1758 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I just west of the kraton, part of this pleasure garden and castle is at present no more than an intriguing collection of ruins, pools, arches and underground passages enclosed by massive walls, however, the central courtyard with the nymph-baths has been restored.

The Water Castle is located in the older part of the city within walking distance from the Bird Market. A number of batik workshops line the avenue leading to the pleasure garden's entrance.

Imogiri

Imogiri is the official cemetery of the royal descendants from Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The royal graveyard is located on a hilltop, reachable by 345 stone steps leading to it.

Imogiri is about 17 kms southeast of Yogyakarta and easily accessible by bus or car. The tombs are built within three main courtyards.

Entry into the smaller courtyards housing the tombs of the princes is allowed only on Monday 09.00 - 12.00 or Friday 13.00 - 16.00. Traditional Javanese dress has to be worn, which however can be hired on the spot at a modest fee. The cemetery is closed during the Moslem month of Ramadhan.
